The word of God tells us in the book of [Proverb 23:7 NKJV] "for as he thinks in his heart, so is he". As you can see, our thoughts serve as a mirror, a reflection of who we are. We’re collectively the sum of the thoughts that we allow to occupy our minds.
During these past few days, I’ve been examining the words of Paul to the Church at Philippi, where he reminded believers that they needed to be “like-minded”, of the same love, of one accord and of the same mind [Phil. 2:2 NKJV]. He reminded them of the fact that they needed to stay away from selfish ambitions, pride, conceit and to be humble while considering the needs of others.
This week, I was pleased to speak to members of several different non-profits, whether they were Christ based or not, collectively they believe in a similar philosophy, that a humanitarian must be selfless. Selflessness allows for one to be able to gravitate beyond his or her interests to that of others. This is exactly what Paul tells us in [Philippians 2:4 NKJV] and I quote, “Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others”. Until we are able to look beyond our individual interests, we cannot begin to consider ourselves Christlike.
Jesus Christ is the greatest humanitarian to ever walk the face of the earth. While he fed multitudes, healed the broken, gave sight to the blind and raised the dead, he also gave his life for a better you and me. The book to the Romans reminds us that rarely does one dare to die for a righteous man but Christ gave his life for unrighteousness [Romans [5:7-9 NKJV]. Surely, this was the greatest act of selflessness ever recorded in human history.
Today, I implore you to please at a minimum, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus” [Phil. 2:4 NKJV]. Allow yourselves to be made a bit uncomfortable for others as children of the same father. While we’re not Jesus Christ, we have the power to inherit his likeness, precisely what the author has asked us to do, allowing the mind of Christ to be found in us.
We have the power to touch lives, ease suffering and allow for a more hopeful future. As hands of the living God, we must go beyond prayer, supplication and begin to take meaningful action for the broken. Let us not forget the word of God which states, “I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak”, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” [Acts 220:35 NKJV]. What are you willing to sacrifice today?
In conclusion: I begin by asking if you have the mind of Christ, the answer is yes, “we have the mind of Christ'' [1 Corinthians 2:16 NKJV]. Having the mind of Jesus Christ allows for the greater good as it convinces our heart to consider doing more than we would otherwise want to do.
