A husband's first ministry, is it family or church?

Updated: Oct 5, 2021

My name is Kelly Hilaire, I am one of the ministers here at the Grace Bible Church Online. While a great deal of my time is spent in the ministry, an even greater percentage is spent working as a dad, a husband and as a health care professional in a busy city hospital. Now, if you were to ask me this very question twelve years ago before I got into the habit of studying the Bible for myself and before I became a dad, without a shadow of doubts, I could have easily said "the church!"; For, I was religious but not grounded in truth.

The Word of God tells us in 1 Timothy 5:8 that, "but if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel". Here in this biblical except, Paul is writing to his faithful student Timothy and the Church of Ephesus teaching them the role of the husband in the family. Paul uses the word "infidel" and the denial of "the faith" to describe a man’s failure in providing for food, shelter, safety, education as well as a Godly environment for his first ministry which is the family.

Finally, the word of God declares in 1 Timothy 3:5 that "for if a man known not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?" Thus, unless a man can faithfully execute his inherited duties as a minister and head of household, he isn't fit nor is he capable of leading the local church.
